The Foundation

The 4 Universal Rules of Firearm Safety

1
Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
Always. Even if you just checked it. Even if someone just handed it to you.
2
Never point at anything you are not willing to destroy.
The muzzle has one job: point at what you intend to shoot. Period. No exceptions.
3
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
Straight finger, outside the guard. Every time. This is the habit that saves lives.
4
Know your target and what is beyond it.
Bullets don't stop at paper. Know what's downrange and what's behind it.
Preparation

Before You Leave the House

Verify your firearm is unloaded before transporting
Magazine out, chamber empty, visually and physically confirmed.
Bring hearing and eye protection for every single person
Everyone on the range wears both — including spectators and children.
Check that you have the correct ammunition for your firearm
Match caliber exactly. Wrong ammo = catastrophic failure.
Secure all firearms and ammo from children during transport
Locked case or vehicle vault. Always.
Know the range rules before you arrive
Each range has specific rules. Look them up. Follow them.
Tell someone where you are going
Simple safety habit. Always let someone know your plans.
Critical

Things That Get People Hurt (or Kicked Off the Range)

×
Never sweep anyone with your muzzle — loaded or not
Grounds for immediate removal and potential criminal liability.
×
Never handle firearms during a ceasefire
Hands off every firearm until the all-clear is given.
×
Never cross the firing line while others are shooting
Stay behind the line. No exceptions for "just one second."
×
Never load a firearm until you're at the bench, pointed downrange, ready to fire
Not in the parking lot, not in the bag, not on the walk over.
×
Never use alcohol or anything that impairs judgment before shooting
This includes prescription medications that affect reaction time.
×
Never allow children to handle firearms without an adult hand immediately present
An adult hand must be on or immediately available to assist at all times.
×
Never look down the barrel — ever, for any reason
Use a bore light or take it to a gunsmith. This is never acceptable.
×
Never fire at hard surfaces or water — ricochets are real
Know your target and distance for steel shooting.
For Parents

Taking the Kids? Read This First.

Teach the rules at home before you go
Familiarity removes dangerous curiosity. Make it a family tradition.
Start with a .22LR
It's the perfect first round for new shooters of any age. Work up gradually.
Choose a quiet time for a child's first visit
Skip the busy Saturday rush. A calm environment makes the first experience positive.
Praise good habits, not just good shots
Celebrate trigger discipline and muzzle awareness as much as accuracy.
Let them ask questions
A curious kid is a safe kid. Answer everything honestly.
Debrief on the drive home
5 minutes of conversation builds lifelong habits. What went well, what to improve, what was fun.

“I want every dad to feel confident walking onto a range with their kids. That's one of the reasons ZeroPoint exists — to build a community where shooting is something families do together, safely, proudly, and with joy. These rules aren't restrictions. They're what make the experience worth having.”
